Gallery III: Series & Sets Galleries

Perpetual Motion Series : Images in the Perpetual Motion Series have been created from photographs of reflections in water taken from a moving boat on Lake Powell. The color relates to the angle of light and the proximity to landforms, the speed of the boat and its wake, and reflections of the boat itself. Elements from the original images have been selected and repeated to suggest motion that never stops. In most photographs, one expects to find a place where the eye comes to rest--a focal point. However, this series seeks to carry the viewer through the image and outward and onward, suggesting that the motion continues beyond the viewing experience. (Series in progress.)

Global Warming Series : The Global Warming Series has been created from both slides and print negatives processed to reverse the effect of light in the images in order to achieve a more ominous sky and to aid in the shifting of colors to suggest a place that has become too warm to inhabit. The series seeks to visualize the degradation of the planet due to the numerous ways in which the Earth has been disrespected to the detriment not only of the planet itself but also of the life that depends upon it. Images were taken in Death Valley, in Rhyolite ghost town, and in the White Mountains. Scorched Moon is a more graphic image with the same message.

Agave Abstracts : Agave thorns seem to remind everyone of a certain part of female anatomy. Ancient cultures used to have fertility goddesses and fetishes to ensure human continuance. I have created Fetish, Agave Goddess, and Totem as a triad of images dedicated to that ancient practice. Agave leaves are excellent objects for creating patterns and designs, such as in Agave Fanfare.

Image Sets : The Image Sets gallery holds images which were developed to function as a unit and which are framed together as a single work. The Aspen Tumble series tells the end of the life of an aspen leaf. The Faith, Love & Hope series was created from an azalea blossom photograph. Faith is symbolized by the candelabra, love by a flowing fountain, and hope by wings lifting the small flame of hope upward to dispel the darkness. Fertility Figures is created from agave leaves.

Reflections : Reflections are always enchanting. We are drawn to them automatically. Most of the images in this gallery were taken from a moving boat on Lake Powell. The colors in the reflections are derived from red sandstone cliffs and the deep waters. The reflections were taken at different times and under different conditions. Some images are straight photographs, while with others I have used a simple image of water ripples to add textural interest. The Green and Brown image is most strongly and visibly textured.

Cloud Abstracts : The images in this gallery are composed of multiple shots of clouds. The forms and textures common in clouds are the basis for the final abstracts. Some images also include a ridge line or landscape element, such as in Torn Sky. Series is still in progress.

Definitely Not Pollack : This gallery contains composite images made from fragments of other images. The bits and pieces were originally created by accident as I tried to get a PhotoShop tool to do something it didn't want to do. Always willing to consider something new, I will exhaust the elements on hand and will then see if I can get a similar result with additional images when I attempt to do the same thing on purpose.....we'll see.

Mesa Glow : The Mesa Glow and Mesa Montage images were created from slides taken in Marble Canyon, AZ. However, the original scene has been changed considerably through the montage process, so that something quite different is contained in the final image. The idea of this series is to get as close as possible to that wonderful glow that sometimes permeates western landscapes, spilling from the clouds onto the landscape. Some of the resulting images almost give the viewer a bird's eye view.

Ode to Abstraction Series : The Ode to Abstraction Series was created from a single slide taken just after dawn from a butte overlooking the Palouse farmlands (Washington). I had long wanted to create a series that explored abstraction. It was a challenging project with one image evolving into another. Eventually a circular set of images and a linear set of images developed. The series is still in progress.

Red Leaf Series : The Red Leaf Series seeks to depict motion through the placement of the leaf photograph juxtaposed in various ways with itself. The titles in the series suggest the motion being illustrated in each piece; thus you will see the words twist, rising, scattering, swirl. The series is still in progress and is therefore incomplete.
