A Betrayal of Reality
During a group photography session where a fluorescent slinky was exposed under black light, I took a number of slinky shots from various angles. It later occurred to me that several shots looked like futuristic buildings. This led to the Architectural Slinky concept. However, since these "buildings" are all so bright and enticing, they suggested that, in Slinkyville at least, the alluring brightness might hide some shallowness or deceptiveness, thus warning us not to become too much attracted by and attached to the glitter. It is well noted that all that glitters isn't gold. I would add that promises of "the greatest, the best, the newest, the most" don't always deliver. So, in a way, Slinkyville is a warning that our culture is sometimes too invested in a "good deal for cheap," in doing only what we feel like doing, in living the "good life," and similar dubious goals. But, of course, if Slinkyville turns out to be a disappointment, we can always run down to the pier and sail away on the Bright Ship of Dreams. In the long run, since Architectural Slinky didn't convey the societal confusion where the more frivolous pleasures and endeavors get confused with the substance of true-life reality, I have had to rename the series A Betrayal of Reality.
